Baker College Announces Culinary Institute of Michigan

Baker College of Muskegon Announces
the Creation of the Culinary Institute of Michigan

Restaurant and pastry shop also named

MUSKEGON, Mich. – During a news conference and ceremony held today in downtown Muskegon, Baker College of Muskegon officials unveiled the name of its new culinary arts program facility: The Culinary Institute of Michigan (CIM). Officials also announced the names of the new restaurant, Courses, as well as the new pastry and coffee shop, the Sweet Spot. Both offerings will be integral to the new facility located at the south corner of Third Street and Clay Avenue.

"When choosing the name and the logo, we decided on a clean, current look that would reflect a state of-the-art school within a very modern facility and a curriculum unlike other traditional culinary schools and programs," said Rick E. Amidon, Ph.D., Baker College of Muskegon president. "We wanted the logo design to stand up alongside national logos that shared similar qualities and brand attributes such
as creativity, innovation, cutting edge and up-scale."

The new 39,000 square foot Culinary Institute of Michigan facility will house The Sweet Spot, a pastry and coffee shop and retail outlet for the community. In addition, the plan includes Courses, a "one-part fine dining restaurant and one-part classroom."

A 3-story facility, CIM will also include a specialty pastry lab, a temperature and humidity-controlled lab for specialty chocolate and sugar design, three hot food labs and state-of-the-art demonstration classrooms.

The Baker College of Muskegon Board of Regents gave final approval last September to invest approximately $11 million in a new culinary arts facility in downtown Muskegon. Clifford Buck Construction Company Inc., is the general contractor and Bosma Architects & Associates, PC, provided the architectural design. Construction, which began in April, is targeted for fall 2009 completion.

The Baker College of Muskegon culinary arts program was launched in 1997 with 110 students enrolled in classes at its current location at 1903 Marquette Avenue. Today, more than 300 students are enrolled in one of Baker’s four business administration degree options, including

  • Baking and pastry certificate
  • Culinary arts Associate of Business Administration degree
  • Food and beverage management Associate of Business Administration degree
  • Food and beverage management Bachelor of Business Administration degree
