Baker College of Port Huron Adds New Culinary Arts Program to Fall Roster

Food and beverage management associate degree starts September 30

Baker College of Port Huron will offer a new Food and Beverage Management Associate Degree program beginning fall quarter. Registration is open for classes that begin Monday, Sept. 30.

“This world-class program offers a teaching team of extraordinary talent, knowledge and achievement,” said Tom Recinella, Program Director of The Culinary Institute of Michigan (CIM), a division of Baker College. “Our state-of-the-art facilities, built specifically for the study of the culinary arts, are ideal for the program’s intensive training that prepares students for successful careers in the food service industry.”

Classes will be held at the new downtown CIM facility, adjacent to the planned hotel and convention center.

Recinella explained that the new food and beverage management program provides students with the skills needed to become a food and beverage manager, responsible for the total management of a food service operation. It includes hands-on laboratory, classroom and cooperative education experiences that focus on staff selection and training, purchasing and inventory control, dining room management, menu planning, coordination of marketing activities, and the overall management of a food service operation.

Students will be able to hone culinary skills through real-world experiences at the CIM restaurant and through opportunities at community service organizations such as soup kitchens and United Way.

Potential occupations include general food service manager, food service owner or operator, banquet and catering director, catering and events coordinator, and restaurant and dining room manager.

New jobs in this industry are projected to be in full-service restaurants and special food services such as health care facilities, nursing and residential homes for the elderly, schools, and other commercial businesses.

According to the May 2012 report of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the average annual salary for food service managers is $52,580, with the lower 10 percent earning $30,820 and the top 10 percent earning $81,030.
